Quantum Gravity effect on neutrino oscillations in a strong gravitational field

Abstract

In the Quantum Mechanics framework an interaction of a neutrino with a graviton causes the collapse of the neutrino wave function to a neutrino mass eigenstate. This essentially Quantum Gravity effect may have strong consequences for neutrino oscillation phenomena over large distances and in extreme astrophysical environments. We found a significant modification of the neutrino oscillation characteristics due to the graviton-neutrino interaction. Based on this study, we propose a new technique for the graviton detection by measuring the oscillation characteristics of astrophysical neutrinos.
